Anonymous asked: do you prefer writing/recording sober or in altered states? also how integral do you think drugs are to music and the creative process?
I’ll borrow and slightly mangle a Hemingway quote here:
“write drunk, record sober”.
Although sometimes the reverse is true. I don’t think drugs are integral to anything except turning off the misery and the boredom, but then again music alone can do that too.
The only record I’ve made totally sober was “stoned alone”, and that was part of the process for kicking a couple of nasty addictions, but i remember feeling just as in tune with the songs then as I am through chemicals now. it’s all about where you are in your head.
I don’t judge anyone for substance abuse or use or misuse, same as I don’t judge sober people either. I’d say what’s really integral to creating any kind of art is honesty, and if you have to get fucked up to get there then right on sister.
