Your ego will always get to you. Learn to listen to the parts of it that know what it’s talking about and to laugh at the parts that are judgmental and angry.
I used to only care what Justin Blackburn thought of my music, but as more and more people started to listen I began to have a crisis of expectations, which produced an album like blue suicide, which is to me the weakest thing i’ve made, but it’s probably the most popular…life is strange.
I have the same crisis now, as I’m getting ready to put out an album of strange songs recorded on very shitty tape machines, because I have to make music or I will die and it’s the only gear I have now.
You have to have a relationship with your art and it’s observers whoever they are, even if only you are observers.
